(Typical Design)

SURFACE/WEARING COURSE – Typically poured at a thickness of 150-200mm of Permcon
permeable concrete.

PERMEABLE BASE COURSE – 150mm layer of washed drainage aggregate, usually a Greywackie
rock DM40/20 or similar. Normal GAP types of aggregate are not suitable.

SUB GRADE – The undisturbed soil beneath the Permcon system. The condition of this layer (CBR) determines the basecourse requirements.

SUB-SURFACE DRAIN – Typically a 110mm Novaflo pipe or similar. Directs excess stormwater in a
controlled fashion into the local stormwater network, reducing peak flows.

FILTER CLOTH – A polypropylene fabric, which allows water to pass through. It also assists in preventing contamination of the sub base when surrounded by clay soil.

Permeable Concrete Driveways in New Zealand

At Permeable Concrete NZ, we install permeable concrete driveways that look good and last. These driveways let rain soak through instead of sitting on the surface, so you get fewer puddles, less flooding, and less water damage around the property. They’re strong enough for daily use, whether it’s a home driveway or a busy commercial forecourt.

We use our Permcon CarbonLow mix, designed for New Zealand conditions. It keeps its strength while helping water drain naturally, cutting down on maintenance and improving stormwater control. Each driveway is planned to suit the site — the slope, the soil, and how it’s used — so it performs well year after year.

With a range of colours and finishes available, our driveways fit neatly with any style of home or business. More importantly, they help recharge groundwater and reduce pressure on local drainage systems. It’s a practical way to manage water, protect the environment, and add value to your property.

FAQs

What makes a permeable concrete driveway different from a traditional driveway?

A permeable concrete driveway allows water to pass through its surface, reducing runoff and preventing water pooling. Unlike traditional concrete or asphalt, it helps with drainage and minimises the risk of flooding and erosion.

Is a permeable concrete driveway durable?

Yes, permeable concrete is designed to withstand regular vehicle and foot traffic. When installed correctly, it provides a long-lasting, low-maintenance surface that resists cracking and wear over time.

How does a permeable concrete driveway help the environment?

By allowing rainwater to filter through, water-permeable concrete reduces strain on stormwater systems, helps recharge groundwater, and decreases surface water pollution. It also prevents excess runoff that can lead to soil erosion.

Can permeable concrete be customised to match my property?

Yes, permeable concrete driveways come in a variety of colours and textures to complement different architectural styles. The permeable concrete mix can be tailored to meet both functional and aesthetic requirements.

Does a permeable concrete driveway need special maintenance?

Regular light maintenance, such as occasional sweeping or pressure washing, helps keep the porous concrete free from debris that might block water flow. This ensures long-term performance and permeability.

How does permeable concrete handle heavy rainfall?

Water-permeable concrete absorbs rainwater and directs it into the ground, preventing puddles and reducing the risk of localised flooding. It is an effective solution for areas prone to heavy rain.

Is permeable concrete suitable for all climates?

Yes, permeable concrete performs well in different weather conditions. In colder climates, it helps prevent ice formation by allowing water to drain, reducing the risk of slippery surfaces.

How long does it take to install a permeable concrete driveway?

Installation time depends on the size of the driveway and site conditions. Once poured, permeable concrete requires curing time before it can be used, ensuring strength and durability.

Is a permeable concrete driveway more expensive than regular concrete?

The cost of permeable concrete varies depending on the project size and specific mix design. While the initial investment may be slightly higher, the long-term benefits, such as reduced drainage costs and durability, make it a cost-effective solution.

Can a permeable concrete driveway be used for heavy vehicles?

Yes, when designed with the appropriate permeable concrete mix, these driveways can support heavy loads, including cars and light commercial vehicles, without compromising strength or permeability.

Will weeds grow through a permeable concrete driveway?

Properly installed porous concrete minimises weed growth by preventing soil from accumulating on the surface. Routine cleaning helps maintain a clean and well-functioning driveway.
